Oasis Deemed 'Unsuitable' To Play In China

March 2, 2009
Oasis Deemed 'Unsuitable' To Play In ChinaOasis' two upcoming concerts in China have been cancelled after the Manchester group were deemed “unsuitable” to perform by authorities.

The band had been scheduled to perform in Beijing and Shanghai next month as part of their tour of South East Asia.

The Chinese culture ministry is understood to have revoked the band's performance licenses after learning that Noel Gallagher had performed at a Free Tibet concert in 1997.

Tibet lost its independence to the Peoples Republic of China in 1951 and ever since the subject has been considered taboo.

In a statement, Oasis said they were “extremely disappointed” and hoped the decision could be reconsidered.

They are the latest in a growing line of musicians, including Jay-Z and Britney Spears, who have been barred from performing in China.

Most recently, Bjork angered Chinese officials after she shouted “Tibet, Tibet” at the end of a concert in the country.
