Damon Albarn: Gorillaz Lacked 'Human Interaction' At Glastonbury

July 27, 2010
Damon Albarn: Gorillaz Lacked 'Human Interaction' At GlastonburyGorillaz frontman Damon Albarn has said the group lacked “human interaction” when they headlined last month's Glastonbury festival.

The cartoon band, who replaced U2 on the bill, came under fire from critics following their performance on the Pyramid Stage.

Many fans also left before the group had finished, despite the promise of appearances from the likes of Snoop Dogg and Lou Reed.

In an interview with BBC Newsbeat, Albarn took responsibility for the poor performance, and said he had since worked to correct his role on stage.

"We were yet to change the dynamic entirely from the cartoon band acting purely as a film orchestra into something that had more of a human element to it,” he said.

"Basically, the difference between that and the next gig we did at Roskilde [Denmark] which was the same sized audience, same age demographic, was I just communicated with the audience more.

"I introduced Bobby Womack, introduced Lou Reed, introduced anyone. I didn't take for granted that if these people were going to be at the front then there had to be some kind of human interaction."

As previously reported, Gorillaz played a one-off landmark show in Syria last weekend.

They have announced details of world tour, which includes rescheduled dates in the UK and Ireland.
