Gorillaz Play Landmark Gig In SyriaJuly 26, 2010
Gorillaz have become the first ever major British band to perform in Syria.
The group, fronted by Damon Albarn, played a one-off gig at an 11th century fortified palace in the country's capital Damascus on Sunday (July 25). They were joined during their set by former Clash members Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, De La Soul and Bobby Womack. Syria has come under fire in recent years over its opposition to Israel and in May the US extended sancions against the country. Damon Albarn told BBC Newsbeat the gig had been a “wonderful experience” - and said that he hoped it would help improve relations. "By virtue of being the first big western act to arrive in Damascus I think hopefully that's the beginning of a dialogue, and that in itself is meaningful for Syria as a whole,” he said. As previously reported, Gorillaz have announced details of world tour, which includes rescheduled dates in the UK and Ireland.
