Derek Smalls: 'Spinal Tap Wouldn't Exist Without Michael Jackson'June 27, 2009
Spinal Tap paid tribute to Michael Jackson as they performed at the Glastonbury Festival this afternoon.
The band were also joined by special guests for their much anticipated set on The Pyramid Stage. Speaking about Michael Jackson, Derek Smalls said: “We must remember, if it wasn’t Michael Jackson, there would be no Spinal Tap.” Spinal Tap made their debut in the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap, around the time that Jackson’s solo career continued to flourish. They have joined a growing list of Glastonbury musicians who have paid tribute to star, who died on Thursday. Meanwhile, Spinal Tap were joined during their set by Jarvis Cocker on bass and jazz pianist Jamie Cullum. Their appearance at the festival coincided with the 25th anniversary of their cult rock movie. The band, who reformed earlier this year, also released two albums - a self-titled debut and 1992's 'Break Like The Wind'.
