Bob Dylan Casts Doubt Over Barack Obama Presidency

April 7, 2009
Bob Dylan Casts Doubt Over Barack Obama PresidencyBob Dylan has cast doubt over the potential achievements of the presidency of Barack Obama, despite endorsing his original bid for The White House.

In an interview with Newsweek, Dylan said he was concerned Obama might not fulfill his intentions as president.

“He'll be the best president he can be. Most of those guys come into office with the best of intentions and leave as beaten men,” Dylan said.

“Johnson would be a good example of that... Nixon, Clinton in a way, Truman, all the rest of them going back.

“You know, it's like they all fly too close to the sun and get burned."

Dylan was a widely publicised supporter of Obama during his campaign to become America’s first black president.

The singer described Obama at the time as someone who was “redefining the nature of politics from the ground up".

In a wide-ranging interview with Newsweek, Dylan revealed that he became interested in Obama after reading his autobiography, Dreams Of My Father.

But he said there was nothing in the book that appeared to signify Obama’s political ambition.

"In some sense, you would think being in the business of politics would be the last thing that this man would want to do,” Dylan said.

“I think he had a job as an investment banker on Wall Street for a second, selling German bonds. But he probably could've done anything.

“If you read his book, you'll know that the political world came to him. It was there to be had."
