Dizzee Rascal Triumphs As World Cup Fever Grips UK ChartsJune 14, 2010
Dizzee Rascal and James Corden have topped the UK singles chart in a week dominated by World Cup songs.
The pair’s ‘Shout For England’ went straight in at number one, despite only going on sale via digital download on Wednesday (June 9). All of the royalties from sales of the song are being donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Somali-born Canadian rapper K’naan scored his first UK Top-10 hit with the World Cup song, ‘Wavin’ Flag’, debuting at number three. ‘3 Lions’ by Baddiel & Skinner and the Lightning Seeds climbed from number 53 to number ten. Other football songs in this week’s Top-40 included New Order’s ‘World In Motion’ at number 22, Terry Venables’ ‘If I Can Dream’ at number 23 and Fat Les’s ‘Vindaloo’ at number 32. Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said: “Few things get the nation’s emotions roused like the World Cup and few things are better at stirring emotion than music. “All England fans will be hoping the national team emulates the success of ‘Shout For England’.” Meanwhile, on the album chart, Christina Aguilera’s new record ‘Bionic’ went straight in at number one. It is the US singer’s third UK album chart-topper. (by Jason Gregory) See also: Dizzee Rascal To Star In The New Inbetweeners Sitcom (16.03.2011)
