High Spirits (instrumental)
. . .

Really don't know, really don't know
Just what's wrong
Feel like I don't belong
And I just can't get together
Today, anyway

Keep on rainin', more and more
Everyday
Yeah, in a wider sense
Yeah, in a wider sense
Keep on rainin'
Keep on rainin'
Everyday

Look to the sky, but the sky may fall
See thru' my eye, but my eye don't see at all

Keep on rainin'

Look to the sky, but the sky may fall
See thru' my eye, but my eye don't see at all

Keep on rainin', more and more
Everyday
Yeah, in a wider sense
Yeah, in a wider sense
Yeah, in the system
Every, every, every, every day

. . .

Ordinary people just don't comprehend
Ordinary people just don't seem to comprehend
The thing you feel they don't even know about
Cut yourself, that never did you no good
You cut yourself, that never did you no good
Nobody watching you, you gotta take care of yourself
Real thing....

When I came down your avenue
Blew you every
Blew you every which way
When I came down your avenue
Bloo hoo hoo you ever which way
Nobody watching you, you gotta take care of yourself

Ordinary people they just don't seem to comprehend
No they don't
Ordinary, everyday people just don't, just don't seem to comprehend
No they don't
Then you feel they don't, they don't, they don't even
Even, even know, even know about..

. . .

How can you stand the silence
That pervades when we all cry?
How can you watch the violence
That erupts before your eyes?
How can you tell us something
Just to keep us hanging on?
Something that just don't mean nothing
When we see it you are gone
Clinging to some other rainbow
While we're standing waiting in the cold
Telling us the same old story
Knowing time is growing old

That was a wonderful remark
I had my eyes closed in the dark
I sighed a million sighs
I told a million lies...to myself....to myself

How can we listen to you
When we know your talk is cheap?
How can we ever question
Why we give more and you keep?
How can your empty laughter
Fill a room like ours with joy
When you're only playing with us
Like a child does with a toy?
How can we ever feel the freedom
Or the flame lit by the spark?
How can we come out even
When reality is stark?

That was a wonderful remark
I had my eyes closed in the dark
I sighed a million sighs
I told a million lies....to myself....to myself

. . .

You're not supposed to be human
You're not supposed to really feel
Not supposed to get involved
With anything completely real
Fifteen families starving
All around the corner block
Here we're standing so alone
Just like Gibraltar Rock

Not supposed to break down
You're not supposed to break down
Swallow the dirt
Keep listening to the hurt
You'll be safe and sound

Supposed to be super human
Cover everything
Just like a bird
Cover an egg with it's wing
And knowing there's nothing sacred
And what is the use
No point trying to find
What is worth, what is true

Not supposed to break down
You're not supposed to break down
Swallow the hurt Listen to the dirt
You'll be safe and sound
You're not supposed to break down
You're not supposed to break down
Swallow the hurt
Listen to the dirt
And you'll be safe and sound

A fool and his mainline connection
By-pass going to the well
But that doesn't matter anymore
I'm sure that we can tell
Who's a puppet on a string
An' who really holds the glove
But it ain't up you and me
It's up to the Lord above

You're not supposed to break down
You're not supposed to break down
Swallow the hurt
Keep on listening to the dirt
And I'll bet you'll be safe and sound

You're not supposed to break down
You're not supposed to break down
Swallow the hurt
Listen to the dirt
I'll bet you'll be safe and sound
And I'll bet you'll be safe and sound
And I'll bet you'll be safe and sound
I'll bet you'll be safe and sound

. . .

Laughing in the wind
Cryin' in the rain
I've felt this way before
I'll feel this way again
And in a small cafe just passing time away
I'm giving you the eye
No need to wonder why

And it's hazy lazy waitin' for springtime
Roll along, roll along
And all you gotta do is
Listen to the song
To the melody
I would do it for you
Would you do it for me

And it's hazy lazy waitin' for springtime
Come along, roll along
And all you gotta do is
Listen to the song
To the melody
I would do it for you
Would you do it for me

I would do it for you
Would you do it for me
I would do it for you
Would you do it for me

. . .

All the men would turn their head
When she walked down the street
Clothes are fine and hair that shine
Smiling oh so sweet, smiling oh so sweet

Got a taste of all religion
Comes on with the new
In her hair a yellow ribbon
And she's decked out all in blue
Oh yes in, decked out all in blue

Steppin' lightly, steppin' brightly
With her books in hand
Going to the university to teach them
Help them understand
And are helping 'em understand

And all the kids would love to see her
Follow in her steps
And tell her stories and adore her
Climb in through the fence
Climb in through the fence

Here she comes walking
Here she comes talking
I do believe it's Madame Joy
Walking past that old street corner
And she's looking for her boy
Oh yes she is, looking for her boy

Steppin' lightly, steppin' brightly
With her books in hand
Going to the university to teach them
Help them understand
Yeah, help them understand

I was looking at the way she moved me
And I was seeing every side
Tell me, can I learn the language
Have you got the mind, have you got the mind

Here she comes walking
Here she comes talking
I do believe it's Madame Joy
She's walking by that old street corner
And she's looking for her boy
Oh yes looking for her boy

And all the men would turn their head
When she walked down the street
Clothes refined and hair that shine
And smiling oh so sweet, oh yes, she's smiling oh so sweet
Smiling, smiling oh so sweet, yeah, yeah, yeah
Smiling, smiling oh so sweet

And all the men would
And all the men would turn their head around
When that woman walked down the street
When that woman walked down the street
When that, when that woman walked
When that woman walked, when that woman walked
When that woman walked, when that woman walked
When that woman walked, what she wore
When that woman, when that woman, when that woman
When that woman, when that woman, when that woman
When that woman, when that woman, when that woman
When that woman, when that woman walked
She just walked
Just kept on walking down the street
When she walked, when she walked down
When she walked on down

Puerto Rican Nursery Rhymes
Angels in the snow and thyme
And I'm keeping my mind on that rose
In a church in Spanish Harlem

Got Watchtowers and Awakes for free
In the laundromat for you and me
But you can't take me down that way
As I'm not sinking

And if we go down one time
Next times not gonna be the last time
And I'm contemplating that rose
In a church in Spanish Harlem
Didn't I bring you precious gifts
Came to kiss you on the lips
Didn't even appear
To beg your pardon

To lay out in the morning sun
Feel the cool breeze and the one
Right there in, in my garden
Puerto Rican Nursery Rhymes
And angels, and angels, and the snow and thyme
But I'm keeping my mind on that rose
In a church in Spanish Harlem

Yeah, and if we go, if we go down one time
The next time will not be the last time, and I'm
Keeping my mind on that, contemplating that rose
Up in a church in Spanish Harlem
And if we go down one time, you know
The next time it won't be the last time

And I'm contemplating that rose
In a church in Spanish Harlem
And I'm contemplating that rose
In a church in Spanish Harlem
And I'm contemplating, and I'm contemplating that rose
In a church in Spanish Harlem
And I'm contemplating that rose
In a church in Spanish Harlem
And I'm contemplating that rose
In a church, in a church in Spanish Harlem

Don't worry about tomorrow
That ain't gonna help you none
Don't worry about tomorrow
That ain't gonna help you none
You've gotta live and take each day as it comes

It may not be exactly what you're looking for
It may not be exactly what you're looking for
But what you're looking for ain't gonna come walking
Through your front hall door, oh no

So, don't worry about tomorrow
Gotta live each day as it comes
Don't worry about tomorrow
You gotta live each day as it comes
It's the only way you seem to get things done

. . .

It's four o'clock in the morning, and there's a new full moon
Shining down through the trees
But don't leave the room now, leave it in doubt
Pretend not to know what I'm talking about
I try, all night long
I try, I want you to come along

I feel it when you touch me, I'm already wet
But how are you supposed to know what you get
Wake me when it's over, but don't turn on the light
Call me by name, that's alright I try, all night long,
Ooh, I try to carry on

And, how can you go through, how can you go through
So many changes
Oh, how can you go through, how can you go through
So many changes
It's a family affair; it's a family affair
It's a family affair, it's a family affair, it's a family affair
Try for sleep, why don't you try for sleep
Why don't you try for sleep

I'm pushin' the river, ready to roll
Oh, I can feel it in my soul
Give me the high light and leave out the rest
You know what they told me
They said the west is best
I try, all night long, I try to get along with
Will try for sleep, ooh try for sleep
Won't you, oh won't you come along, come along
Try for sleep, try for sleep
Ya, ya, ya, ya, ya, ya, ya, yaaa
I want you to try for sleep
I know you will try, ooh baby
Ooh baby, baby, baby, baby, baby

. . .

Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord

Just wanna be with my love tonight
I don't want no jive artists calling me on the telephone
Don't wanna watch the Carson show all alone
I just wanna lay back, take my rest
With the one I love's head resting on my chest

Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord

Just wanna be with my love tonight
And I don't want my best friends even coming round
'Cos if they do I might put 'em down
Carson's over and the lights way down low
And all I got, I got a heart full of soul

Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord
I said, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord
I said, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord

Just wanna be with my love tonight
And it's a lover's prayer, oh yes it is
Takes a little time, takes a little care, yeah, yeah, yeah
And when it gets way on in the midnight hour
I just wanna play my guitar
I just wanna see you smile, touch your face
Be with you in my own place

Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord
I said, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord

Just wanna be with my love tonight
Just wanna be with my love tonight
Just wanna be with my love tonight

I was talkin' to the judge
just before we left the countryside,
paper in his hand,
tryin' to find a way.
Goin' by the book,
"Man, you oughtta make a serial."
Ripped the pages out
'fore they pull the final curtain down.

I remember the day
just like the Drumshanbo hustle.
We couldn't hear no birds,
they were makin' not a sound.
They were tryin' to muscle in,
an easy way to bring the money in.
You were pukin' up your guts
when you read the contract had been signed.

Prostitution on the run,
'ceptin what it was last night.
Tryin' to drain you dry,
couldn't get too much rope.
Tryin' to take 'em down
just to see how far it all would go.
Wasn't goin' very far
and she didn't let it bring you down.

Just remember the day,
just like the Drumshanbo hustle.
I couldn't hear no birds,
they were makin' not a sound.
They were drivin' motionless
on the recording and the publishing.
You were pukin' up your guts
when you read the contract had been signed.

New York hooker style,
and the tarot and astronomy.
Tell you every star,
didn't even get your sign.
Well they were lookin' for a scam,
a little paperback novel or a little magazine,
but you left it all behind
when you pulled the rug from underneath her feet.

Just rememberin' the day,
Drumshanbo hustle.
Well you couldn't hear no birds,
they were makin' not a sound.
They were tryin' to muscle in,
an easy way to bring the money in.
You were pukin' up your guts
when you read the actual contract had been signed.
You were pukin' up your guts
when you heard the contract had you signed.
You were pukin' up your guts
when you heard the contract, the contract, had you signed.

The rain is all over, it's only stopped for an hour
And I stop you, and I stop you
When you go too far
And you stop me when I go too far
And it tried to freak me
But I should have known
It's not the twilight zone no, it's not the twilight zone
Yes it's just a party phone, pure honeycomb, honeycomb, honeycomb

You tried to take me in a slow poke draw
Like the cowboy wished
And you got just what you saw
Well, you got what you saw
Didn't you get, didn't you get, didn't you get
So, don't let it freak you
When, when it gets down to the bone
You know it's not the twilight zone, it's not the twilight zone
It's just a party phone, and honeycomb, honeycomb
It's not, it's not the twilight zone
It's just a party phone
Honeycomb, honeycomb, honeycomb, honeycomb

(spoken):
It's not, it's not the twilight zone
It's just a party phone

And honeycomb, ya!
You know it's not the twilight zone
It's, it's just a party phone
Honeycomb, honeycomb, honeycomb, honeycomb

You know what it is
Just a party phone, party, phone
Honeycomb, honeycomb, honeycomb, honeycomb
Hmm, hmm, hmm
Honeycomb, honeycomb

I'm standing by my window
And I'm waiting on the summer rain
And I'm standing by my window
And I'm waiting on the summer rain
Well, I felt this way before and
I'm gonna feel this way again

I've been listening to this music
Ever since the age of three
I've been listening to this music
Ever since the age of three
I want you to play me a "T" for Texas
Or play me a "T" for Tennessee

I want a plain glass of water
Vanilla ice cream with a cherry on top, that's what I want
I want a plain glass of water
Uh, huh, vanilla ice cream with a cherry on top, mm, hm, hm, hm,
Take a walk with me, baby
Up the foggy mountain top, watch it!

I'm going up on highway one
Said you know I dig it the most
I'm going up on highway one
Eh, you know I dig it the most
I'm gonna sing this song
All along the water coast
I want a plain glass of water
Ice cream with a cherry on top, that's the way I like it, ah!

I want a plain glass of water,
Vanilla ice cream with a cherry on top
Walk with me, baby
Up the foggy mountain top, what's that?
Oh, come along with me, oh!
On the foggy mountain top
Keep on walking, keep on walking, baby
On the foggy mountain top
Keep walking with me baby
Up the foggy mountain top

Naked in the jungle, naked to the world
Naked in the jungle, naked to the world
Well, you gotta keep it humble, else it'll come unfurled

Lions and the tigers, grazin' in the grass
Lions and the tigers, grazin' in the grass
As I keep a-watching over, make sure no one can pass

Ha ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha. Aaaaah!
Speak out, speak out, speak out, speak out
Speak out, speak out, speak out, speak out
Speak out, speak out, speak out, speak out
Speak out, speak out, speak out, speak out

Ya na na na na, ya na na na na, ya na na na na,
Ha ha ha ha
Ya na na na na, ya na na na na, ya na na na na,
Ha ha ha ha
Ya na na na na, ya na na na na, ya na na na na,
Ha ha ha ha
Ya na na na na, ya na na na na, ya na na na na,
Ha ha ha ha

Big fish eat the little fish, and the rabbit's on the run
Big fish eat the little fish, and the rabbit's on the run
Some folks gettin' too much, other just ain't gettin' none

Naked in the jungle, naked to the world
Naked in the jungle, naked to the world
Well, you gotta keep 'em humble, else you'll come unfurled

Let's go boy!
Ha ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha. Aaaaah!
Speak out, speak out, speak out, speak out
Speak out, speak out, speak out, speak out
Speak out, speak out, speak out, speak out
Speak out, speak out, speak out, speak out

Ya na na na na, ya na na na na, ya na na na na,
Ha ha ha ha
Ya na na na na, ya na na na na, ya na na na na,
Ha ha ha ha
Ya na na na na, ya na na na na, ya na na na na,

There there child, there there child
Don't it make you feel alright
There there child, don't it all look good tonight
And you feel like going but you gotta stay
Ain't no time for to hop on a freight train
And you feel like laying in the morning hay
'Cause it's time for a nap now, before rain

There there child, don't it make you satisfied
There there child, you can rest your weary eyes
And you feel like walking on a mountain top
Or a ride on a boat up the river
And the last lonely sheep has returned to the flock
As you wing over the white cliffs of Dover

There there child, there's a glint in your eye for surprise
There there child, are you ready to don your disguise, yes you are
Sun goes down across the pond and the wind, wind is blowing wild
And the swallow soars and the lion roars
Outside your front door, by the oak tree in the meadow

There there child, there there child
Are you ready to don your disguise
There there child, there's a glint in your eye for surprise
Do you feel like walking on a mountain top
Or ride on a boat up the river
And the last lonely sheep has returned to the flock
As you wing over the white cliffs of Dover

As you wing over the white cliffs of Dover, straight ahead
As you wing over the white cliffs of Dover, straight ahead

. . .

Your street, rich street or poor
Used to always be sure, on your street
There's a place in your heart you know from the start
Can't be complete outside of the street
Keep moving on through the joy and the pain
Sometimes you got to look back
To the street again
Would you prefer all those castles in Spain
Or the view of your street from your window pane

And you walked around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
And the street only knew your name
Well the street only knew your name, your name

Well Walter and John, Katie and Ron
Used to hang out by the corner lamp light
Get together and sing some songs
Like rhythm and blues you make me feel alright
That were long before fortune and fame
Nothing to lose and so much to gain
Everyone knew who everyone was
And they knew it because of the street

And you walk around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
While the street only knew your name
Well the street only knew your name, your name

And you walk around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
While the street only knew your name
The street only knew your name, your name
Sing it, "Be-Bop-A-Lula"
"Who Slapped John?"

. . .

When John Henry was a little baby
Sittin' on his mama's knee
Well he picked up a feather and a piece of steel
And said that's gonna be the death of me
Lord, lord, lord that's gonna be the death of me
Well John Henry had a little woman
Name of Polly Ann
Well John got sick had to lay down on the bed
Polly drove steel like a man
Lord, lord, lord, Polly drove steel like a man

Well John Henry went up on the mountain
Well the mountain was sinkin' in
He said come on captain I know what I'm doin'
It ain't nothin' but my hammer suckin' wind
Lord, lord, lord, It ain't nothin' but my hammer suckin' wind

Well john Henry went up on the mountain
Lord the mountain was so high
He said we're gonna shake this steel drivin' down
Give me a cool drink of water before I die
Give me a cool drink of water before I die

Some say he came from England
Some say he came from Spain
But John Henry was nothin' but a Louisiana man
And he died with his hammer in his hand
Lord, lord, lord, he died with his hammer in his hand
Steel drivin' man, he died with his hammer in his hand
Lord ain't nothin' but my hammer suckin' wind etc. etc.

How sweet that joyous sound
Whenever we meet, whenever we meet
How sweet that joyous sound
Whenever we meet again

I think you know it well
Whenever we meet, whenever we meet
I think you know it well
Whenever we meet again

?????
Yah alright
And you will begin to know about that
That grace will follow us
Wherever we go, wherever we go
That grace will follow us
Until we meet again
Hey!

Oh yeah
Uhuhuhuh

Just run and let it out
Oh yeah now
And you will begin to know about it darling
That grace will follow us
Wherever we go, wherever we go
That grace will folow us
Until we meet again

(Van and choir)
How sweet that joyous sound
Whenever we meet, whenever we meet
How sweet that joyous sound
Whenever we meet again
Oh! Whenever we meet

Whenever we meet again
Oh! Whenever we meet

I have finally come to realise
Child don't do what I have done
Cut my nose to spite my face
Made my own odds 10,000 to one

I saw the Empire slowly fade away
Tried to grasp it with my hand
Then I saw that it was not up to me
I'm just one tiny, tiny grain of sand

Oh, sweet release, oh how you soothe me
When I let go, I love how you use me

I have finally come to realise
It's something they're doing that they're doing that we find
A certain way that we can live our lives
And I'm takin' some peace of mind

Oh, sweet release, oh how you soothe me
And when I let go, and when I let go
I love how you use me
I have finally come to realise
It's something they're doing that they're doing that we find
A certain way that we can live our lives
And I'm takin' some peace of mind

I have finally come to realise, yes I have
Child don't do, child don't do what I have done
I cut my nose, I cut my nose to spite my face
I made my own odds 10,000 to one

I cut my nose to spite my face
I made my own odds 10,000 to one
One more time

I cut my nose, I cut my nose
I cut my nose to spite my face
I made my own odds 10,000 to one

Lie by my side in the still of the night
And morning brings forth all it's wondrous delight
You couldn't have made it more plain
When I hear that soft refrain
And I hear you gently sigh
I wanna take you where flamingoes fly, flamingoes fly
Way over yonder in the clear blue sky
That's where flamingoes fly

Lie in the dark with the sweet sound of the nightingale
And listen for lark, and I will tell you a tale
Soft winds blowin', blowin' outside
I wanna take that moonlight ride
When I hear you gently sigh
I wanna take you where flamingoes fly, flamingoes fly
Way over yonder, yeah in the clear blue sky
That's where flamingoes fly

Silently waiting for that morning light to shine
Yeah, and I'm looking at you, looking at me
And I'm looking at you
And anticipating
Each and every, each and every sign
And I'm looking at you, looking at me
And I'm looking at you, looking at me
Looking at you, looking at me, looking at you

I follow the road that will take me, take me back home
And carry that load where the deer and the provincial angels roam
Happiness touches me now
Who knows where it came from and how, but
When I hear you gently sigh
I wanna, wanna take you where flamingoes fly, flamingoes fly
Way over yonder in the clear blue sky
That's where flamingoes fly, flamingoes fly

Way over yonder in the clear blue sky
That's where flamingoes fly
You see those flamingoes fly
Ya see those, ya see those, ya see those
Ya see those, ya see those, ya see those flamingoes fly
Look over yonder, look over yonder, darling
Look over yonder, darling
Ya take it by the ocean, ya take it, ya take it by the ocean
Mmm uhhh, take it by the ocean

. . .

It seems like it must have been something that I said
Something that somebody must have done

This is a song
It's got a whole lot of soul
When I seen you by the way before
In New York City
I think it was on Eighth Street, right?
Or was it in San Francisco, whatever

Always put the first one first
And the second one, second

Come in the garden and look at the flowers
That's what you were saying, right?
Come in my garden and look at the flowers
We can Just sit and talk for hours and hours
Come in my garden, come in my garden
Come in my garden

Come in my, come in my, come in my garden
Come in my, come in my, come in my garden
Come in my garden, come in my garden
Look at the flowers, we can just sit and talk
And feel
As the sun come over the valley
As the sun come over the valley

I believe
I like the way
I like your face from the left side
As you go
As you go stepping out queen
Stepping out queen

It's just a windfall away, it's just a windfall away
It's a windfall away
As you, as you, as you, as you go, as you go
Stepping out queen
Let me see you step out
Come on!

As you go steppin' out queen
You can promenade
You can promenade
When you step
With a little bit of hip action

You go steppin' out queen
just a little bit of hip for the trip
As you go
Steppin' out queen

I said give me a little bit of shoulder slide
Come on
Da, dada, do dodo, do dodo, do dodo, do doooo
Come on baby I just wanna reach out
I wanna reach out and touch you
I don't wanna talk

. . .

From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road
We'll be lovers once again
On the bright side of the road

Little darlin' come with me
Won't you help me share my load
From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road

Into this life we're born
Baby sometimes, sometimes we don't know why
And time seems to go by so fast
In the twinkling of an eye

Let's enjoy it while we can
Won't you help me share my love
From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road

From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road
We'll be lovers once again
On the bright side of the road
We'll be lovers once again
On the bright side of the road

. . .

Come on out child
We gonna ring doorbells and run
Come on out child, child
We gonna ring doorbells and run
We gonna shake up the neighbourhood
Lord, we're bound to have some fun
We can take a plane to Paris
Lord, we can fly to Rome
We can take a plane to Paris
Lord, we can fly to Rome
I get a lump in my throat every time I go back home

I'm gonna go to church on Sunday
Just like my mama did
I'm gonna go to church on Sunday
Just like my mama did
We gonna put everything up front
'Cause there's nothing that we wanna keep in
We gonna put everything up front
'Cause there's nothing that we wanna keep in

I'm gonna go to church on Sunday
Just like my mama did
I'm gonna go to church on Sunday
Just like my mama did
We gonna put everything up front
'Cause there's nothing that we wanna keep in
We gonna put everything up front
'Cause there's nothing that we wanna keep in

Come on out child
We gonna ring doorbells and run
Come on out child, child
We gonna ring doorbells and run
We gonna shake up the neighbourhood
Lord, we're bound to have some fun
We gonna shake up the neighbourhood
Lord, we're bound to have some fun

Come on out child
Come on out child, child
Come on out, come on out, come on out child
Come on out child
Come on out child, child
Come on out child, child

. . .

I'm real real gone
I got hit by a bow and arrow
You got me down to the very marrow
You're a friend of mine
And I'm real real gone

On the radio
Music coming and I hear
Sam Cooke's voice
Well I know I don't have any choice
That's the way it is
And I'm real, real real gone, man

I can't stand up by myself
Don't you know, baby, I need your help
You're a friend of mine
And I'm real real gone, alright

Well, I'm dancing
Dancing till my, till my body's soaking wet
Till I'm completely wet with sweat
Once I've started I'm just real real gone, man
I got hit by a bow and arrow
Got me down to the very marrow
You're a friend of mine, and I'm
Real gone, man

Well the music's playing
On the radio
And the night is filled with space
When my fingertips touch your face
You're a friend of mine
And I'm, I'm real real gone

Help me stand up
Help me stand up
All by myself
You're a friend of mine
And I'm real, I'm real real gone
Real gone
I got hit by a bow and arrow

Say you wanna be in showbusiness
See the man on the TV with a phoney smile
Bring you up, bring you down
He can turn your head around
In showbusiness, showbusiness

See the man on a silver screen
With the phoney smile
Bring you up, bring you down
He can turn your head around
Showbusiness, showbusiness

Have a hit, maybe two
Make mincemeat out of you
Come back in two years time
Lay your heart right on the line
In showbusiness, showbusiness
Showbusiness, showbusiness

Where's the next one, where's the next one
Where's the next one
Oh, baby just like the last one
Like the last one

Say you wanna be in showbusiness
See the man in the suit
With the phoney smile
He can laugh, he can cry
He can make you reach the sky,
He can say anything you wanna hear
Be anything you wanna be
You can say anything you want to hear
Be anything you want him to be
Make you leave your family
In showbusiness, in showbusiness

Take it to the bridge
And the next one, and the next one
And the next one
How can you do it like the last one
Now do it just like the last one, please
Like the last one, like the last one just like the last one

Say you wanna be in showbusiness
Have a pretty face and a pretty smile
I'm thinking
Make you laugh and they can make you cry
But they can't wait, wipe the tear drops from your eye
In showbusiness, showbusiness

Say you wanna be in showbusiness
See the rock star up on the stage
Right now
Behind them drugs, behind them booze
Behind them people he can use
Behind them people usin' them
Behind them people usin' us
And the next one, and the next one
And the next one
Can you make it, just like the last one
Oh, you make it just like the last one
Like the last one
Just like the last one

Say you wanna be in showbusiness
All the world is a stage
Everybody must play their part,
I've been so long in showbusiness
I feel right now just like I got myself just started
Forget the junk, forget the jive
I just want to stay alive
In showbusiness, in showbusiness

Take it to the bridge
And the next one, and the next one
And the next one
Oh, just like the last one, just like the last one
Like the last one

They can rob you with a fountain pen
But you got to find some honest men
They can make you leave your home
Where you go to waste and roam
Control your fate, control your life
They can make you leave your wife
It's showbusiness, it's showbusiness

Take it to the bridge
And the next one, and the next one
And the next one
Oh, just like the last one, can you make it
Like the last one
Can you give it one more time
Like the last one
Can you put it out, like the last one
Showbusiness, it's showbusiness
It's showbusiness, showbusiness
It's showbusiness, showbusiness

From faded newsprint used to wrap a fish
Inscrutably the muse selects your face
As I sit drinking famously in an Irish bar
Five thousand miles and thirty years away

With the usual ceremonial you were crowned one night
King of the field where doctors nail the cows
To make of the cock's quill the rights of language
And the pricking heart a sword against the hours

Let smirking scholars writhe in their favourite bondage
And hold you plaintiff to the charge of art
Exhibit A: he falls on legendary lines
Singing mother I don't want a pain here in my heart

The judge in me sucks eggs and jerks the sacred meat
But the boy in me still dreams in Milk Wood town
Like two provincial bastards playing the galleries
I hold your photo to a mirror upside down

And as bacon wafts through hungry streets, your ghost pervades
Just like an old ex-boxer aged twenty two
Staged-up like Falstaff or the wild welsh Rimbaud
You'd laugh to see the monograms they make of you
Ah, Mr. Thomas let us ramble through the midnight fair
Let us throw old bottles at the ferris wheel
Let us paint library on the library let us raid the moonlight
Let us steal whatever we are supposed to steal

Let us watch while the days grow daily more mundane
That rough God go riding with his shears
Hack wide the belly of the swollen mountains
And rip molten heroes forth from their furious tears

Oh, Mr. Thomas, oh, Mr. Thomas,
Let us steal whatever we're supposed to steal
Mr. Thomas, oh, Mr. Thomas,
Why don't we feel whatever we're supposed to feel

Oh, Mr. Thomas, Mr. Thomas,
Why don't we feel whatever we're supposed to feel
Oh, Mr. Thomas let us ramble through the midnight
Let us throw bottles at the ferris wheel
Let us paint library on the library let us raid the moonlight
Let us steal whatever we're supposed to steal

That lover of a night
Came when he would,
Went in the dawning light
Whether I would or no;
Men come, men go;
All things remain in God.
All things remain in God.

Banners choke the sky;
Men-at-arms tread;
Armoured horses neigh
In the narrow pass:
All things remain in God.
All things remain in God.

I had wild Jack for a lover;
Though like a road
That men pass over
My body makes no moan
But sings on:
All things remain in God.
All things remain in God.

Before their eyes a house
That from childhood stood
Uninhabited, ruinous,
Suddenly lit up
From door to top:
All things remain in God.
All things remain in God.

Oh, that lover of a night
Came when he would,
Went in the dawning light
Whether I would or no;
Men come, men go;
All things remain in God.
All things remain in God.

All things remain in God.
All things remain in God.
All things remain in God.
All things remain in God.

Words by Peter Handke

When the child was a child
It walked with arms hanging
Wanted the stream to be a river and the river a torrent
And this puddle, the sea
When the child was a child, it didn't know
It was a child
Everything for it was filled with life and all life was one
Saw the horizon without trying to reach it
Couldn't rush itself And think on command
Was often terribly bored
And couldn't wait
Passed up greeting the moments
And prayed only with it's lips
When the child was a child
It didn't have an opinion about a thing
Had no habits
Often sat crossed-legged, took off running
Had a cow lick in it's hair
And didn't put on a face when photographed

When the child was a child
It was the time of the following questions
Why am I me and why not you
Why am I here and why not there
Why did time begin and where does space end
Isn't what I see and hear and smell
Just the appearance of the world in front of the world
Isn't life under the sun just a dream
Does evil actually exist in people
Who really are evil
Why can't it be that I who am
Wasn't before I was
And that sometime I, the I, I am
No longer will be the I, I am

When the child was a child
It gagged on spinach, on peas, on rice pudding
And on steamed cauliflower
And now eats all of it and not just because it has to
When the child was a child
It woke up once in a strange bed
And now time and time again
Many people seem beautiful to it
And now not so many and now only if it's lucky
It had a precise picture of paradise
And now can only vaguely conceive of it at best
It couldn't imagine nothingness
And today shudders in the face of it
Go for the ball
Which today rolls between it's legs
With it's I'm here it came
Into the house which now is empty

When the child was a child
It played with enthusiasm
And now only with such former concentration
Where it's work is concerned
When the game, task, activity, subject happens to be it's work

When the child was a child
It was enough to live on apples and bread. And it's still that way
When the child was a child berries fell
Only like berries into it's hand. And still do
The fresh walnuts made it's tongue raw. And still do
Atop each mountain it craved
Yet a higher mountain. And in each city it craved
Yet a bigger city. And still does
Reach for the cherries in the treetop
As elated as it still is today
Was shy in front of strangers. And still is
It waited for the first snow. And still waits that way
When the child was a child
It waited restlessly each day for the return of the loved one
And still waits that way
When the child was a child
It hurled a stick like a lance into a tree
And it's still quivering there today

The child, the child was a child
Was a child, was a child, was a child, was a child
Child, child, child
When the child, when the child, when the child
When the child, when the child
The child, child, child, child, child

(added words by Van Morrison)
And on and on and on and on, etc. And onward
With a sense of wonder
Upon the highest hill. Upon the highest hill
When the child was a child
Are you there
Shassas, shassas
Up on a highest hill
When the child was a child, was a child, was a child
Was a child, was a child, was a child, etc.
