Jeff Buckley Fans Launch Bid To Make 'Hallelujah' Christmas Number 1

December 11, 2008
Jeff Buckley Fans Launch Bid To Make 'Hallelujah' Christmas Number 1Fans of the late Jeff Buckley have launched a bid to make the singer's cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' Christmas number one.

Over 3000 people have joined a Facebook group dedicated to the challenge in a bid to prevent the winner of The X Factor from dominating the festive chart.

As previously reported, this year's winner will release their own cover of the song as a Christmas single next week.

Buckley's cover of 'Hallelujah' originally featured on his 1994 debut album 'Grace'. The singer died in 1997.

His version has already climbed six places to number 43 in the UK singles chart after contestants road tested the track on a recent edition of the talent contest.

It is the second time Buckley has enjoyed posthumous success with the song as a result of a reality TV show.

Earlier this year, the song topped the US Billboard download chart after being sung by Jason Castro, a contestant on American Idol.
