You don't have any secrets when you come into the world
You're open like a book and the pages get filled
The leaves keep turning and on every single page
They write their story with the marks on you face
Marks on your face

Locked in your head an unbreakable code
A secret never spoken is a story never told
Gonna show you the back of my hand they say
You can hide those scars but they hurt you every day
They hurt you every day
They hurt you every day

Chorus
What was written on the back of his hand
You once said it out loud you won't say it again
What was written on the back of his hand
You once said it out loud you won't say it again
What was written on the back of his hand
You won't say it again

Water is holy when it falls from the sky
Water tastes bitter when it falls from your eyes
Lay down on the ground and look up at the sky
There's no rhyme or reason when you're watching time fly
Watching time fly

When the stars come out the night is alive
Connect those stars with the lines of your life
With the lines on your hand with the words that you write
One true word's gonna beat a pack of lies
Beat a pack of lies
Beat a pack of lies

Chorus

One true word's gonna beat a pack of lies
One true word's gonna beat a pack of lies
Beat a pack of lies

(Paul Brady)

Snow-bound siren in the winter dawn
There's a blizzard blowing in from off the river
It's ten below out on these city streets,
But the feeling in your heart is even colder
The sunrise screeching down the line
And the fog banks running out of time,
But you won't be here when they creep in tomorrow
You're tired of dreaming someone else's dreams
When they really don't include you any longer
Miles from home, you're sliding down with each day
And you need a woman's love to make you stronger
And lately you've been getting doubts
A voice inside keeps calling out
That someone else's dreams don't get you nowhere.
So shut the suitcase, kiss the year goodbye
Don't let nobody stop you at the doorway
And close the shutters on this empty room
Where these crazy dreams come crawling to devour you
And head on out across that line
Where she's been waiting all this time
And tell her that you want her there forever.
It's still two hours till this plane gets down
Can hardly bear to wait another minute
Your sweet loving babe is all that I need
Darling it's been building up inside of me
Tonight we'll go and paint this town
We're gonna drink champagne, till we both fall down

. . .

Lucy Kaplansky and Rick Litvin

You were sitting by yourself
When I came to say hello
Loading up on cigarettes
And drinks before the show

By the time you hit the stage
You were tearing at the seams
I could have told you you'd had enough
But you weren't listening

Chorus
Every single day
Take's a piece of you away

Every single day

When you grabbed the brass ring
You hid it deep inside
You didn't know it's not yours to keep
It's just not that kind of ride

You heard them laughing at you
But it was just a falling star
So you threw the face you'd pasted on
At those bodies in the dark

Chorus

I can still remember you
When you were back lit from inside
And I would stand there next to you
The bridesmaid to the bride
Later on my radio
Man said envy it's a sin
I could have told him save his breath
Cause I'm not listening

Chorus

. . .

written by Lucy Kaplansky, Buddy Miller, Rick Litvin

Don't mind me I'm just a a bit maniacal about you
And derailed when I'm without you
Don't mind me
Don't mind me If you could love me just a little it'd be okay
Cause I couldn't leave you anyway
Don't mind me
It doesn't matter what you say
I just like the way you sound
And if you turn away
I'll just turn you back around
Come on baby please
Play your song for me
Don't blame me
It's just your burning gravity
That brings me to my knees
In front of you
Don't blame me I just wanna get you on the ground
Play a little lost and found
Don't blame me
It doesn't matter what you say
I just like the way you sound
And if you turn away
I'll just turn you back around
Come on baby please
Play your song for me

If you could love me
If you could only love me
I'd walk across hot coals to you
I'd stop the rain and wind for you
I'd save all my sin for you
For you for you
It doesn't matter what you say
I just like the way you sound
And if you turn away
I'll just turn you back around
Come on baby please

written by Julie Miller

You can have my heart
It isn't new
It's been used and broken
And only comes in blue

It's been down a long road
It got dirty on the way
If I give it to you will you make it clean
And wash the shame away

You can have my heart
If you don't mind broken things
You can have my life
If you don't mind these tears
I heard that you make old things new
So I give these pieces all to you
If you want it, you can have my heart

So beyond repair
Nothing I could do
Tried to fix it myself, but it was only worse
When I got through

Then you walk right into my darkness
And you speak words so sweet
And you hold me like a child till my frozen tears
Fall down at your feet

You can have my heart
If you don't mind broken things
You can have my life
If you don't mind these tears
I heard that you make old things new
So I give these pieces all to you

. . .

Guilty as sin
I know where you've been
Guess she was alone last night

You took what you want
Now it's all gone
I was just another free ride

And I just needed something
Really next to nothing
And all I've got is another one
That won't be mine

Chorus:
As if we never kissed
You cross another off your list
But I know where you've been
I know where you've been
Guilty as sin

In that motel not so far away
You said there's so much you couldn't say
Then you went and told me anyway

My new red shoes under the rented bed
Stolen kisses are sweet you said
And I bought that tired line again

Do you know how it feels to be second best
Nothing more and so much less
I wanna be the one who wins and turns away

Chorus

You found something in me
And I found something in you
It wasn't worth very much
That's one thing that is true
just promises and lies
Promises and lies

So cold today
Wind is blowing
You turn your face away
Can hardly see where you're going

Walking downtown
Eighth Street, Washington Square
Stepping carefully
In the footprints someone left there

While the city all around you
Becomes only paper thin
And the wind on your face
Is freezing someone else's skin

And the sun is making movies
Slo-mo black and white
You wish you could breathe the cold air
And feel it move inside

I know what it is to be nowhere
I know what it's like
I know what it is to be nowhere

Long ago in your room
Pretended you were far away
Then you looked into your mother's eyes
Saw no one was reflected there

Now your secrets are your companions
You know them all by heart
They're written on your body
You read them in the dark

Carved underneath your sweater
So you'll always remember
At least they're something to hold onto
Hold onto

I know what it is to be nowhere
I know what it's like
I know what it is to be nowhere
Nowhere

Walking downtown
To a place you've never been before
Go inside and say your name
And close the door
Go inside, say your name
And close the door
Go inside
Go inside

. . .

Lucy Kaplansky and Rick Litvin

Go ahead, do whatever you want
This is all about you
It's okay, don't bother feeling guilty
Like the rest of us do

The truth is something you've heard about
But you don't know what it means
It's only a word after all
Just one more thing you don't take seriously

You were bored so you played with your wifes best friend
Wrecked families along the way
And you stepped on the people who stood beside you
Cause they looked at you the wrong way

And now you're so lonely
And there's no one there for you
And the bodies in your wake, it was their fault
They didn't try to understand you

Chorus
No more excuses baby
No more excuses baby
No more excuses

Your life is one long hit and run
You don't bother to look back
There's always someone running behind you
Spreading dirt to cover your tracks

When I was all alone and I needed you
What I price I paid back then
For a little warmth you wanted everything I had
I'll never reach for you again

Chorus

If you could only hear what people say
As soon as you turn your head away
Do you really think that you won't pay
When you're all alone one day
You have to live with yourself everyday
But I can walk away

Chorus

Lyrics: Lucy Kaplansky & Richard Litvin
Music: Lucy Kaplansky

Molly's sitting on her bed
It's Sunday afternoon
Radio's playing outside
TV bleeds from the next room

Antiseptic in the air
Nurses laughing down the hall
Crooked feet in crooked shoes
Her wooden cane against the wall

It's Sunday but her Sunday clothes
Are packed away somewhere
She doesn't need them anymore
Nothing to look her best for

I'm thirteen, I'm with with my mother
She doesn't know my name
I remind her I'm Lucy
But she looks at me the same

Like I'm a stranger she should remember
From a place she can't return
We've only just walked in
She says we've stayed too long
Too proud to be remembered
As a mother without a home

Oh, it's time to go
Oh, it's time to go
It's a dirty trick this growing old

We walk the halls anyway
My mother holds her arm
She's pleading with us to leave
So we walk her to her room
And we drive through the old neighborhood
The grand homes of the South Side
So many are abandoned now
So many lifetimes locked inside

And at the dinner table
It's my parents and me
I sneak looks at the two of them
To see what they need from me

And later she calls me over
Where she sits alone
She's polishing a silver ring
I've never seen before

She says this was Molly's
It was her mother's ring
I'm keeping it for you
As she kept it for me

Oh, it's time to go
Oh, it's time to go
It's a dirty trick this growing old

I'm told Molly was so proud to have
Another baby girl
Her only granddaughter
But I don't remember

Written by Steve Earle

I've spent my life following things I can not see
And just when I catch up to them they slip away from me
I've been down a thousand trails I've never walked before
I found out that without fail they lead me to your door
And the world keeps turning round and round
It leaves me hanging in the air
My heart keeps turning upside down
And you're still standin' there
Lately I see all the signs
I feel it in the wind
The same thing happens every time that you come back again
I admit that there are nights
when I sit up and cry
But sometimes i turn out the lights and pray you'll pass me by
And the world keeps turning round and round
It leaves me hanging in the air
My heart keeps turning upside down
And you're still standin' there

Since you're gone my empty arms have nothing left to hold
And your memory cannot keep me warm but it never leaves me cold
And the world keeps turning round and round
It leaves me hanging in the air
My heart keeps turning upside down

A house, not a home
Was the picture Satan painted
For sweet little sister and me
Our daddy would frown
While mother was prayin'
His heart was so hardened
That he would not believe

In anger he'd swear
His voice cold and loud
His Sundays were spent
Out with the gamblin' crowd
I've never seen my daddy
Inside a house of God
For Satan held his hand
Down the path of sin he trod

Not long ago
Our circle was broken
When God called on mother one night
In a voice sweet and low
Her last words were spoken
Asking our daddy
To raise her children right

The angels rejoiced
In Heaven last night
I heard my daddy pray
Dear God, make it right
He was smiling and singing
With tears in his eyes
While mother with the angels
Rejoiced last night
While mother with the angels
