Today dear you've heard a real grown up word
When you've heard the judge say custody
So little darling how I'd try before saying goodbye
To explain what that word means to me
(Custody) custody means coming home at night
To the emptiest house in this lonely world
(Custody) and custody is just a picture in my WALLET
And it's all that I've got left to my little girl
(Custody) and custody means no more carryin' a sleepin' princess
To her bed at the end of the day
(Custody) and custody means that no more little girl
With A SCRAPED KNEE will ask me to kiss her tears away
Little angel don't cry now you can smile if you try
You're going with mama so kiss daddy goodbye
(Custody) and custody means no more pretty little helper in blue jeans
Follow me around when I cut THE LAWN
(Custody) and custody means no more frightenin' little girl in my arms
Durin' a thunder and a lightnin' storm
(Custody) and custody means that this day ends just before it really begins
(Custody) and custody means a fight between grownups that little girl never wins
Little angel don't cry you can smile if you try
You're goin' with mama so kiss daddy goodbye

The old maid's a waitin' for leap year to come the crooner's just waitin' to sing
The old cow's standin' by the Bull Durham sign
Just waitin' for the grass to turn green
The bar-fly's waitin' for an easy mark the hitchhiker's just waitin' for a ride
The lifetirmer's waitin' for a prison break the beachcomber's waitin' for the tide
Farmer's daughter's waitin' for the salesman to take her into rown
The city slicker's waitin' for the country boy to lay all his money down
You know everything comes to standstill nothing seems to make a turn
Worm must be waitin' for the early bird
Now I reckon the early bird's waitin' for the worm
Nobody wants to do nothin' just waitin' to get a finger in the pie
Waitin' for a call for a big quiz show or a waitin' for some rich uncle to die
Katy she's waitin' at the garden gate the moonshiner's waitin' at the still
The gambler's still waitin' for that Ace in the hole and I guess Jack's still waitin' for Jill
Everybody's waitin' for something but nothing seems to turn out right
Cause the night shift's waitin' for mornin' and the burglar he's just waitin' for night
The congregation's waitin' for the preacher the preacher's just waitin' for the groom
The groom's just waitin' for the June bride and the bride's just waitin' for June
Sunflower's waitin' for the sunshine violet's just waitin' for dew
Bee's just waitin' for honey and honey I'm just waitin' for you

Should you go first and I remain to walk the road alone
I'll live in memory's garden dear with happy days we've known
In spring I'll wait for roses red when fade with lilac's blue
And in early fall when the brown leaves fall I'll catch a glimpse of you
Should you go first and I remain for battles to be fought
Each thing you touched along the way will be a calloused spot
I hear you boys I see your smile though blindly I may grow
The mem'ry of your helping hand will boil me on the thought
Beyond the sunset oh blisful morning when with our Saviour heaven is begun
Earth stroll is ending oh glory dawning beyond the sunset when day is done
Should you go first and I remain to finish with the scroll
No lenghtenin' shadows shall creep in to make this life seem droll
We've known so much of happiness we've had our cup of joy
And mem'ry is one gift of God that death cannot destroy
I want you to know each step you take that I may walk the same
For someday down that lonely road you'll hear me call your name
Should you go first and I remain one thing I'll have you do
Walk slowly down that long long path for soon I'll follow you
In that fair homeland we'll know no parting beyond the sunset for evermore

A tongue can accuse and carry bad news
The seeds of distrust it will sow
But unless you've made no mistakes in your life
Be careful of stones that you throw
A neighbor was passing my garden
One time, she stopped and I knew right away
That it was gossip not flowers she had on her mind
And this is what I heard my neighbor say
"That bad girl down the street should be run from our midst
She drinks and she talks quite a lot
She knows not to speak to me or my child"
My neighbor then smiled and I thought
A tongue can accuse and carry bad news
The seeds of distrust it will sow
But unless you've made no mistakes in your life
Be careful of stones that you throw
A car speeded by and the screaming of brakes
A sound that made my blood chill
For my neighbor's one child had been pulled from the path
And saved by a girl lying still
The child was unhurt and my neighbor cried out
"Oh who was that brave girl so sweet?"
I covered the crushed broken body and sad
The bad girl who lived down the street
A tongue can accuse and carry bad news
The seeds of distrust it will sow
But unless you've made no mistakes in your life
Be careful of stones that you throw

The sun comes up and the sun goes down. Hands on the clock they just keep going around.I just get up and its time to lay down.Life gets tee-jus don't it?
My shoes untied but I don't care.I really ain't figuring on going anywhere.I just have to wash and comb my hair, and thats just wasted effort.
The water in the well its getting lower and lower can't take a bath for six month's more. But I've heard it said and its probably true, that to much bathing it'll weaking you.
I open the door and the flies swarm in.I shut the door and I'm sweating again.I move to fast and I crack my shin. Its just one darn thing after another.
Old brown mule he must be sick.Jabbed him in the rump with a stick. He humped his back but he didn't kick.Something cockeyed somewhere.
Mouse chauwing on the pantry door.Fool's been at it for a month or more. When he gets through he sure going to be sore. There ain't a dang thing in there.
The cows gone dry and the hens won't lay.Fish quit biting last Saturday.Troubles pile up day by day.Now I'm getting dandriff.
Grief and misery, pains and woes, debts and taxes and so it goes. Now it seems I'm getting a cold in the nose.Life gets tasteless don't it?

Now friend if you'll just listen to me you'll get some good hard earned advice
I don't aim to meddle in your business just tryin' to save you an awful price
Now you see these teeth I ain't got and these knots on my bald head
I'll guarantee you boys I didn't get them there just lyin' at home in the bed
Now take the smart alec in any town of him folks want no part
He acts like his head was only made just to hold his ears apart
Now he might act like what I'm bout to say and my words may make him sore
But I'm just tryin' to be thankful cause I've been down that road before
To bully folks and play mean tricks was once my pride and joy
Till one day I was toted home and mama didn't know her little boy
My head was swelled up so doggone big I couldn't get it through my front door
Now I ain't just talkin' to hear myself cause I've been down that road before
A little fellow bout my size got tired of being pushed about
So he went to work and when he got thru he'd knocked every one of my teeth out
One time too many I'd rubbed him wrong and he evened up the score
Now that's what happens when you get too big for your britches
And I've been down that road before
Now when you get to thinkin' you're really smart
There's always somebody smarter than you
And no matter how much you boast and brag you can still learn a thing or two
Go get you some treatments just like I've had and you won't hanker for more
I really learned the meaning of living and loving I've been down that road before
Now the man that walks this rocky road usually gets just what he deserves
Cause he's just a helpless servant to a master that he serves
Now I've learned to slow my temper down and not to pick no scraps no more
Boys it's a lot easier on the head and eyes I've been down that road before
