Tom Jones: The Beatles Scared Elvis PresleyJuly 30, 2010
Tom Jones has revealed that the Beatles’ attempt to break America in the early 60s concerned Elvis Presley.
The Welsh singer, who was close friends with the King, said he was worried the Liverpool band would eclipse him. "When The Beatles came to America in the early Sixties, it really shook Elvis up,” Jones told The Sun. “He didn't think that anyone was a threat, that anyone would ever be able to touch him. But when he saw how big The Beatles were getting, he was really worried. “He thought that the British beat groups would sweep him away.” But Jones said that his arrival gave Elvis more confidence because he was “selling as much as all the groups”. As previously reported, the 70-year-old veteran is on course to top the UK album chart this weekend with ‘Praise & Blame’. It will make the Welshmen the oldest male UK chart topper ever.
