Simon Cowell Haiti Charity Song Is Fastest-Selling Single This CenturyFebruary 9, 2010
Simon Cowell's charity single for the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti has become the fastest-selling single of the century.
The song, a cover of 'Everybody Hurts' by R.E.M., has sold over 200,000 copies since its digital release Sunday. It replaces another Simon Cowell-organised charity song – 'Hero' by the X Factor finalists – as the fastest-seller since 2000. Martin Talbot, Managing Director of the Official Charts Company, said: “This is a phenomenal achievement. The public are certainly not showing any signs of charity fatigue.” The song – organised in the wake of last month's earthquake – features an all-star line up of vocalists include Mariah Carey, JLS, Robbie Williams and Take That. All proceeds from the charity single will go to The Sun's Helping Haiti fund and the official Disasters Emergency Committee. More than 200,000 people were killed in the earthquake on January 12.
