Johnny Marr Forbids David Cameron From Liking The Smiths

December 2, 2010
Johnny Marr Forbids David Cameron From Liking The SmithsThe Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has forbidden prime minister David Cameron from liking the band.

The conservative politician has frequently listed the Manchester band among some of his favourite acts, and also has some of their “gloomy music” on his iPod.

In 2008, he also unsuccessfully attempted to re-create an iconic picture of the group outside Salford Lads’ Club.

But in a post on Twitter, Marr, who now plays with The Cribs, claimed Cameron wasn't a real fan of the band.

“David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don't,” he wrote. “I forbid you to like it.”

Cameron's favourite bands also include Keane, who expressed sadness when the Tories used one of their songs during the General Election campaign.
