The xx Album Sales Soar Following Mercury Prize 2010 WinSeptember 9, 2010
Sales of The xx's debut album have soared as a result of the band's Mercury Prize triumph earlier this week.
The South London trio's self-titled debut beat eleven other albums to claim the award on Tuesday (September 7). Music retailer HMV said sales of 'xx' have risen by 448% and that it was now expected to climb back into the top-5 on the UK album chart. The album debuted at number ten on the countdown when it was first released in August last year. HMV Music Manager John Hirst said The xx's sales boost showed that the public agreed with the judges' decision. Of the other nominees, Villagers have also seen a big sales surge, with sales of their debut album 'Becoming A Jackal' rising by 333%. Sales of twice-nominated Laura Marling's latest album 'I Speak Because I Can' have also increased by 227%. Mumford & Sons and Biffy Clyro are also expected to remain inside this week's top-10 with their nominated albums, 'Sigh No More' and 'Only Revolutions'.
