Babyshambles Play 'Secret' Gig At Great Escape

May 18, 2009
Babyshambles Play 'Secret' Gig At Great EscapeBabyshambles played a secret show for festival-goers at Brighton’s Great Escape festival yesterday (Saturday 16th May).

The Levi’s sponsored event saw fans queuing round the block all afternoon at Audio, on the Brighton seafront, to catch Pete Doherty and the band.

They played six songs to a crowd that overflowed into the bar next door’s garden at 6pm. Babyshambles came straight from a shock Libertines reunion at London’s Rhythm Factory on Friday night.

The surprise reunion gig, a tribute to the late Johnny Sedassy, saw Carl Barat and Pete Doherty singing Libertines hits including ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’, ‘Up The Bracket’ and ‘What A Waster’ on the same stage, accompanied by Gary Powell on drums and Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell.

The set also featured a surprise appearance from Libertines’ former guitarist, Pat Walden, who joined to band to close with ‘Pipedown’ and ‘Fuck Forever’.

The Libertines split in 2004. Following much speculation, the gig on Friday will likely fuel rumours that a reunion may be on the cards this summer.
